THE JOSEPHINUS HARPSICHORD
The harpsichord heard in this recording has enriched the instrument collection
of the Budapest National Museum for 100 years_ It was acquired
in the summer of 1875 by Canon Ferenc Ebenhoch. a noted patron of collecting
antiquities in Hungary, from the Gy6r convent of the St. Ursula order, who
according to tradition , was once used in the Vienna cou rt, and more than two
hundred years ago reached Hungary in an adventurous manner, as a donation
of fmperor joseph 11.
The unique instrument was probably made in I workshop in the Netherlands
al Ihe end of Ihe 171h cenlury. lIs keybqard is covered with mOlheroOf-pearl,
tortoise shell and ebony, the front bears fjgures playing music, painted on
ivory plates, while the resonating boards under the strings are decorated with
painted flowers and exquisitely wrought parchment rosette.
