Three weeks before J. S. Bach’s birth at Eisenach, Georg Friedrich
Haendel was born in Halle in a well-to-do family where his inclination
for music was contended by his father who wanted him be a
jurist. The Duke of Saxony who heard him as a child of 8 years
old play the organ with a precocious virtuosity insisted that he
should take lessons from an organist of a high repute. When his.
father died, Hrendel, a young student of 18, went to Hamburg to
give himself up to music and was engaged as a cellist in the Opera
orchestra. At 19, he composed his J ohannes Passion and at 20 he
successfully produced two operas.
He travelled then to Italy where he has welcome everywhere, to
England where his reputation was boundless and lastly to Ireland
where he took refuge when his admirers abandoned him. He finally
returned to London when the wave of hostility fell, although he
experienced again success during 4 years. When he reached the
age of 65, he became blind like Bach and abandoned musical composition.
He only lent his aid from time to time as an organist for
religious concerts. He died at 74, leaving a very abundant musical
work.
The four suites for the harpsichord carried by the present record
illustrate Hrendel’s marvellous gift of writing for the Keyboard.
in the suite n. 5 in E major, you will find a complete tonal unity
and a melodic affinity between the different pieces; this suite belongs
to a collection Hrendel seems to have handed over to his editor in
1720.
The suite n. 10 in D minor, n. 13 in B flat and n. 14 in G major
form part of a collection dated about 1733. These suites are particularly
full of feeling and rythm, harmony and melody merge to .
gether therein to a varying extent.
Ruggero Gerlin, alone, one of the greatest harpsichord players of
our time could give such a glamour to these works through his
brilliant execution.
