Widely considered as one of the undeniable masterpieces of pop music, Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” (the album) was recorded and mixed in Detroit at Hitsville, Golden World and United Sound Studios, but the officially released version featured a new mix made at The Sound Factory in Los Angeles. The original Detroit mix was kept in the vaults until the release of the deluxe 2-CD edition of the album in 2001. Here you can hear both the (original) Detroit and (official) Los Angeles mixes of the title track, taken from a 2017 Japanese reissue and a US reissue of the album from the 90s, respectively. Originally released in 1971.
