It was released after “Express Yourself”, matching that single’s chart success by hitting #2 as well on the Billboard Hot 100. “Cherish” stayed in the runner-up position for two weeks, behind Janet Jackson’s “Miss You Much” starting on October 7th of 1989. That chart placement behind Jackson caused the entertainment media to try to start a rivalry between the then-two leading females of pop, which was ultimately unsuccessful.
