JOSEPH PAYNE was born in 1938 in an ox-cart somewhere
along the Chinese-Mongolian border. His father was an
Anglican cleric; his mother, Swiss. He received his formal education
in England, Switzerland and the United States. He began
the serious study of the harpsichord at 18 and was one of the
youngest pupils ever accepted by Wanda Landowska. Mr. Payne
made his New York debut at Carnegie Hall in 1960; since then he has
concertized e~tensively and has won an international reputation as one
of the leading virtuosos of his generation
