Joseph Payne was born in the Province of Chahar,
North China, the son of a Swiss mother and an
Anglican missionary to Mongolia. He began his musical
career at an English choir school; later studying piano
and organ in Lausanne while majoring in classics at
College de Vevey.
Though still a British citizen, he has lived in the
United States since 1954, completing his formal training
in Connecticut.
He made his debut as a harpsichordist in 1960. His
tours, broadcasts and recordings display a solid mastery
of 18th century keyboard styles, earning him an international
reputation as one of the leading virtuosos of
his instrument.
Mr. Payne now resides in Cambridge, Massachusetts
and is a professor of music at Boston University.
