Payne’s harpsichord was built in 1969 by the Cambridge maker Eric Herz. Not unlike the largest instrument contained in the Spanish Queen’s collection, it has four sets of strings – 4′, 8′, 8′, and 16′. The latter rests on its own separate bridge and sounding board, following the practice of the 18th century Hamburg maker Hyronimus Hass.
Recorded in Cambridge, Massachusetts, May 1970.
Recording supervised by Nathaniel S. Johnson
Notes by Siso Gandara and Nathaniel S. Johnson

JOSEPH PAYNE is one of the more brilliant young harpsichordists
and, since his New York debut in 1960, has cultivated a niche for
himself as a top-flight executant of Scarlatti’s music.
He concertizes, teaches harpsichord playing at Boston University,
and is frequently heard in cycles of Bach, Couperin and Scarlatti over
the Eastern Educational Network.
