Jos van Immerseel was born in Antwerp
in 1945 and attended the
Antwerp Conservatory, where he was
awarded first prizes for his virtuosity
on three keyboard instruments:
piano, organ, and harpsichord. He
continued his studies with the Canadian
harpsichordist Kenneth Gilbert,
who urged him to specialize in that
instrument, which complemented Immerseel’s
already more than casual
– interest in older music. He had also
honed this aspect of his art as conductor
of the Antwerp Collegium
Musicum and the Alma Musica.
At the Conservatory, Immerseel
began composing and writing articles
on music and organizing concerts and
lectures given both in Belgium and
other parts of the Continent. In his
belief that the “old music” is really
the “new music,” he considers that
his most important duty is “passing
on the original musical ideas of the
composer to the listener …. ”
Immerseel now carries on the tradition
of the harpsichord as a teacher
at the Conservatory. With that institution’s
facilities available at Antwerp,
along with the resources at the
Vleeshuis Museum, the tradition of
harpsichord technique continues, as
does the restoration of the instruments
themselves, and the historical
importance of this work has been
rewarded ,by a growing international
reputation. This was underscored in
1973 when Irnrnerseel was named
first laureate at the Concours International
de Clavecin de Paris.
