In spite of its length, the performers’ skills, sensibilities and taste keep interest high at all times in this piece. Performed on Sept. 18, 1965 by saxophonist John Handy’s quintet on the eighth version of the Monterey Jazz Festival and released the following year as one of the two performances that made up the ensemble’s first live album, which was put by Jazzwise magazine at the 67th place in its “100 Jazz Albums That Shook the World” list, and “If Only We Knew” received a Grammy nomination for best jazz composition. Performers are John Handy on alto saxophone, Mike White on violin, Jerry Hahn on guitar, Don Thompson on double bass and Terry Clarke on drums.
