By EGON F. KENTON

There are many strange situations, surprising turns of
events and seemingly inexplicable developments in the
history of peoples in general, and of European nations
in particular. Since there are no effects without causes,
we find in trying to explain these situations a great
variety of prime movers-climatic, dynastic,.economic,
social-that we can accept as final cause, origin, or
ground for the events that astonished us. Since art is
created by men-individuals or groups-it is natural
that this cause-and-effect relationship applies also to the
history of the different arts. Some of the most fascinating
details of this relationship are just the final causes
of, for instance, the Near-Eastern character of medieval
church music in England or France; the Byzantine style
of Psalterbook illustrations in southern Germany; the
sudden appearance of the canzona francese in the 16th
century in Italy, or the rush of composers of many
nations all at once, now to Paris, now to Vienna.
One such puzzling situation is the remigration of Czech
musicians in the 18th century, choosing their destina-
tion at random and having only one aim: away from
home!
