Here’s the late, great John Francis Anthony “Jaco” Pastorius III backed by the 22-piece Word Of Mouth Big Band live at the Avery Fisher Hall (now the David Geffen Hall) in New York City on June 27, 1982, as part of jazz impresario George Wein’s Kool Jazz Festival. The main performers are Jaco Pastorius on electric bass, Bob Mintzer on saxophones and bass clarinet, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Othello Molineaux on steel drums, Don Alias on percussion and Peter Erskine on drums. This performance of “Liberty City” features Toots Thielemans on harmonica.

Part of this concert was broadcast by National Public Radio (NPR) on their “Jazz Alive!” series. The complete concert was officially released by Resonance Records on Record Store Day 2017 on a 3-LP set mastered by Bernie Grundman and named “Truth, Liberty & Soul”, limited to 5000 numbered copies (also released on CD and digital files the same year).
