Jack Daugherty (1930-1991) was an American musician credited as the producer of the first four albums of the successful pop duo The Carpenters. Although, according to Richard Carpenter, he was actually more of an A&R man to them than their producer, and his biggest contribution was passing their demo tape to Herb Alpert, founder of A&M Records, Carpenters’ label.

In 1971 he released “Jack Daugherty And The Class Of Nineteen Hundred And Seventy One”, an album referred to as “a supersession of the finest studio musicians in Hollywood” by British music magazine Sounds. In fact, big names like Jeff Porcaro, Joe Osborn, Hal Blaine, Larry Carlton, Milt Jackson, Joe Pass and Ray Brown among others took part in the recording of this LP which, as of 2020, hasn’t been released on any digital format.

Mastered by Bernie Grundman. Composed, arranged and produced by Jack Daugherty, who is also credited as the only piano player on the album. “Number Nine”, the cut that opens the B side of the LP, features a trombone solo by David Dahlsten.
