Mr. Kipnis’ harpsichord used in this recording was built for him in 1970 by the New York firm of Rutkowski and Robinette and closely resembles in both sound and appearance the large German double-keyboard instruments of the 18th century.
It has the following disposition: Lower Manual- 16′ quill, 8′ leather, 8′ quill, 4′ quill, buff (harp) stop for the lower 8′ registers; Upper Manual: 8′ quill; Manual coupler.

Igor Kipnis
Since his debut in 1959, Igor Kipnis has
performed in recital and as soloist with
orchestras throughout the United States
and Canada, Europe, South America,
Israel, and Australia. He has made twenty-six
solo LP’s, receiving Grammy Award
nominations in 1964, 1971, and 1972; the
Deutsche Schallplatten prize in 1969; and
the Stereo Review Records of the Year
awards in 1972, 1973 and 1976.
Mr. Kipnis hosted his own radio program,
“The Age of Baroque,” for New York
City’s station WQXR for three seasons;
for Oxford University Press he has edited
a music anthology, A First Harpsichord
Book, and for Alfred Music he has prepared
a critical edition of “The Sufferings
of the Queen of France,” Op. 23, by Jan
Ladislav Dussek. Currently a contributing
editor and record reviewer for Stereo
Review, Mr. Kipnis has also reviewed for
The American Record Guide, the New York
Herald Tribune, the New York Post, Musical
Courier, Listen, and Notes. He is the
son of the former Metropolitan Opera
bass, Alexander Kipnis, and a graduate
of Harvard University.
He is presently Artist-in-Residence at
Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut,
‘and he has lectured extensively on
baroque performance practice at, among
other institutions, the Westminster Choir
College Harpsichord Festival, the Early
Music Institute of Indianapolis, and the
Berkshire Music Center (Tanglewood).
