“Basie”, “The Atomic Mr. Basie” and “E=MC²” are the names by which the 1958 album recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra playing Neal Hefti compositions and arrangements is known. It’s one of Basie’s best known and most acclaimed works, winner of the best jazz performance by a group and best performance by a dance band awards at the 1st Annual Grammy Awards in 1959. “The Kid From Red Bank” is the album opener, and this piece was used by the very best radio station ever in my area as its ID jingle for most (if not all) of its existence before being absorbed by a big network. It’s a very special recording to me for that sole reason.

Recorded on October 21 and 22, 1957. Original mono UK pressing.
