“Never Turn Your Back On A Friend” is the third full-length LP by Welsh heavy metal pioneers Budgie, and it is generally considered their magnum opus not in small part thanks to “Breadfan”, which is also generally considered their signature song, and a favorite of many metal acts to cover, most notably Metallica on their 1988 single “Harvester Of Sorrow” (they also covered Budgie’s “Crash Course In Brain Surgery” on their “Garage Days Re-Revisited” EP).

Budgie’s idea for “Breadfan” was releasing it with a spoken prelude by Sir Winston Churchill (an excerpt from his speech at the Mansion House on november 10, 1942), and it seems they thought there wouldn’t be any problem using Churchill’s voice as the intro for their song, since the album was originally released that way. But soon they discovered they were facing legal problems because of that, and that’s why that intro had to be removed from the LP on the following pressings, never to be released again (as of 2018). Here you can hear the track as originally intended.

Original Australian pressing from 1973.
