There is a tradition that the Harpsichord
is supposed to tinkle, especially on record.
ings. This one doesn’t.
The PEDAL HARPSICHORD on this
record is a rarity amo-ng rare instruments,
reputedly the only one in the Western Hemisphere.
Virile-voiced and capable of shatter.
ing climaxes, it is a new experience in
sound … and’ a startling revelation qf the
music of its day.
There is strong evidence that the great
German “organ” works were written for the
Pedal Harpsichord as much as fO:r organ.
Bach used the Pedal Harpsichord in his
home for his composing, and it was the common
practice of the day to mark such music
“for two keyboards and pedal”, rather than
for organ. There are astonishing new things
. to be heard in these great works as played
on the Pedal Harpsichord – an instrument
which sets forth contrapuntal lines with new
clarity, and rhythmic intricacies with unac·
customed crispness.
Mozart’s spritely C ~ajor Sonata has had
a rather full public life including a popular
arrangement called “In An 18th Century
Drawing Room.” This will be its first harpsichord
‘ recording. Among other things it is
an interesting example of Mozart’s strong
har.psichord tendencies. (especially true in
his early and late periods). His use of “terraced
dynamics” for expression is a harpsichord
technique – a baroque echo device
of alternating pianissimo and fortissimo
phrases from one keyboard to the other.
